GENERAL PRESENTATION
The Carlos III University of Madrid (UC3M) is a public university founded in 1989. Its main goal is to provide specialised training in Law and Social Sciences and Engineering, as well as to become a prime European research centre. In addition, the Carlos III University of Madrid pursues the creation of an innovative university and seek to offer a University model based on a quality-oriented philosophy. In this sense, modern, flexible and multidisciplinary curricula have been designed trying to suit the scientific and technological demand of the Society. The university is located in the southern metropolitan area of Madrid and consists of three centres: the Faculty of Law and Social Sciences, the Faculty of Humanities, Communication and Library Science and the School of Engineering. Concerning the training area, the Carlos III University of Madrid was the first in Spain to be fully adapted to the requirements of the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) (The Bologna Process) and offers studies in most of the scientific disciplines.

RESEARCH
UC3M has strived, since its foundation, to make research one of the fundamental pillars of its activity, both for the enhancement of its teaching and for the new knowledge and new areas of research.
UC3M is organized into 26 Departments and 24 University Research Institutes. In addition, since 2005 it has an Official Catalogue of Research Groups, composed of scholars who share common lines of work, carry out collaborative research project and publish jointly. The Catalogue is comprised of 118 groups, which cover almost all of bodies of knowledge and studies at UC3M.
UC3M, as university, has a national reputation for its research efficiency. It holds second place in participation in the EU Framework Programme (standardized data by number of permanent researchers) and second in average number of publications per permanent researcher in the period 2002-2006 (Web of Science). Recently (Report 2009 of CNEAI-National Commission for Evaluation of Research Activity), UC3M has reached the top of the Spanish universities in research activity.

The Research Service (with a staff of 27 persons) is responsible for the overall management of the UC3M research. It functions range from raising public and private funds and managing them to centralizing all the research information, including assessment and prospective.
As a result of an agreement with three other Spanish universities, UC3M has opened in 2009 an Office in Brussels, to promote the incorporation of scientific and scholarly research activity at universities into European Union research programs.
